For me there are three main times when I'd love to have an extra battery and a little more energy;
1. during the twelve hour long forensics tournaments my debate team goes to on Saturdays during the school year; just two hours of sitting in a noisy, crowded high school cafeteria, punctuated by performances in front of kids you've never met is extraordinarily tiring; and I still have ten hours left! My friends and coach always tease me because I invariably fall asleep at the table about an hour before it's over :)
2. When my family and I travel to England to visit relatives; you probably all know the feeling; running around a noisy, crowded airport for three hours before boarding a cramped, poorly ventilated plane and being inches from another human being for nearly ten solid hours, only to get off said plane in the middle of the night to drive another eight hours, again, within inches of other people the whole time, just so we can see relatives for two weeks. Just thinking of the whole ordeal makes my skin crawl!
3. When my best friend is in the neighbourhood and comes to spend the entire weekend; don't get me wrong, I love her to death, but she is a serious extrovert and not content to stay in the house for more than three to four hours at a stretch before needing to get out and find others. I, of course, being the good, although perhaps a little too subservient friend that I am, follow her around town as we visit all our school friends, the local park, the grocery store, everywhere within walking distance... and when you live in a town with less than 5,000 people in it, you can walk pretty much everywhere. After virtually 48 solid hours of that kind of socialising and physical exercise, I am all too ready for Monday to come around!
Oh, if only we had our own rechargeable batteries!

Hi Jill, Yes, I've had a few of those fights too, knowing that I just couldn't bear to go somewhere but not knowing WHY I really needed that time to recharge. And yes, great point - we definitely need extra batteries around the holidays. I'm thankful to have a sweet family and friends, but the activity around Christmas was almost enough to make me have an introvert meltdown. Thanks for your comment, and please come back to Introvert Zone soon!

I'm a stay-at-home mom now and I LOVE it. But when I was working, before having kids, having an extra battery for those weekends with the in-laws would have been great. I didn't understand myself at the time, but I really needed the weekend to recharge. It caused a lot of fights early in our marriage. It would also be nice to have one here around the holidays when it's weekend after weekend after weekend of having to go to see family.

Oh DF, that week sounds like a sheer, living hell! I know your boss thought, "????" when you told him to go on without you, but good grief that was a lot of togetherness with no "me time" at all! I had a job that involved a lot of travel a few years ago, and yep, I'd go to dinner with coworkers each night because I knew it was expected, but then what I really looked forward to was digging into a legal or police thriller in my room. At the time, I did not yet know I was an introvert, so I thought that was "just me." Now I know the book was not only enjoyable, but necessary!

Earlier this year, I took a business trip to Tokyo with the president of my company to meet with one of our biggest distributors and attend a conference. I'm not involved in the business affairs side of the company, I work in the lab, but I'm the only one in the company that speaks any Japanese. It was a one week business trip, I was absolutely drained by day 3, and the conference still hadn't started. I would have done anything for some extra batteries on that trip. Conferences in English are tiring enough for me, but doing it in a non-native language was miserable. We were up having meetings by 8 a.m. every morning, and I wasn't getting back to my hotel room until 11 that night because we were having dinner and drinks with people from the conference. The sixth day, we didn't have any meetings in the evening; so, my boss and I were on our own for dinner. I had to tell him to go on without me just so I could have a little bit of time to myself.

Yes, very nice, Nick! I think I will feel a little more relaxed knowing I have my battery with me. It may mean saying, "I'll meet you there... I have an errand to run," or "I'm going to bed now," but I can make sure I have a charged battery before I'm on to the next activity.

You could look at it this way, we already have extra batteries. They may not be attached to a bunny or a drum. For you Christie, it's reading a book, for me it's a ride on my bike or maybe a quick road trip.

Maybe we can't sneak away but we can always do it in our mind.
