An introvert asks: Suburban Introvert: Can I survive in a city?

The following was sent to me by a male college student:

Dear Introvert Zone,

I’m considering moving to Cleveland, OH after I finish my schooling. I don’t drive, and the only hospital that can treat me is in Cleveland, OH (The Cleveland Clinic). This is a long time from now, years in fact, but it worries me. I’ve never lived in a city before, and it seems like it would be the best fit for my situation–but I’m -very- sensitive to noise, and I like living alone. I plan on living in a studio for my lifetime (all I can afford on my salary, and I like being alone–dating doesn’t…work out for me), but would that be considered weird to live in a studio your whole life, after your 30s? Help!

Worried But Ok

  1. My personal opinion is that it might be the best thing that ever happened to you, if you find the right apartment where there’s not a lot of noise that bothers you. You might enjoy being in a situation where you have your private space, your studio, yet you see people as you’re coming and going so you’re not isolated. And you may just meet a few people who turn out to be true friends or even dates, as you get to know them over time!

Oh, and about the studio, I don’t think there’s anything at all wrong with living in a studio your whole life. Unless you crave to have lots of yard work to do and many rooms to clean and maintain, a studio can be home, too, and you can make it very nice and attractive so that you’re living there because you WANT to. 🙂

  2. I don’t see anything wrong with living in a studio. As someone who likes minimalism, I think a studio is the perfect place to put that into practice 🙂 It can be a cozy, low maintenance space. As for living in the city, I think the key point is to find a place in a quiet area, with nice neighbors who won’t have noisy parties. As an introverted traveler, I find it easier to get around in larger cities, because no one wants to know who you are and you’re left alone most of the time.

      • I think the test is so irnenestitg. I was obsessed with it when we first took it. I am glad Matt is reading the article! I also think it is irnenestitg to see who is intro or extro online. Because everyone always seems extroverted. Curious though, does your alone time ever involve the kids? Or is it TOTALLY alone?

  3. I agree with cb, the new experience will help you come out of yourself more, new environment, new people, new places. Like you, I’m sensitive to noise too. Finding some nature spots in the city like parks, etc. might help. I wish you all the best, Lewi

  4. Cities are great because people actually respect your privacy more. No nosy suburban soccer moms always poking around your business. You can always no matter what go out and eat whenever, or shop. Things are open past 8. It’s just more free, which I love as an introv

  5. I agree with the first post – city life can be a haven for the introvert! They’re anonymous and you can go as long as you want without speaking to another person. You can also find very quiet apartments in certain areas and many apartments are sound-proofed these days. I’d go for it 🙂

  6. I don’t think that would be a great idea. Why don’t you do something that would boost your personality like workout. So that you could gain confidence. You may try working out alone like check out online and see some self workout.

  7. I do believe that introverts have so much to offer than extroverts. The only problem is the ego or the self esteem is not with them. Their EQ is not there. How I wish some introverts can get over their being behind in the society. I did do away with it. I used to be one.

  8. Your mode of describing the whole thing in this post is genuinely pleasant, all be able to without difficulty understand
    it, Thanks a lot.
